The birthstone for July is the ruby.


Ruby, the red variety of corundum, is one of the world's most valuable gemstones. The name ruby comes from the Latin rubeus (red). A ruby's color is due to a trace of chromic oxide; the amount of this substance determines the depth of color. Because of its hardness and durability, ruby is an excellent choice for all types of jewelry.

Rubies are believed to have great powers. It's been said that owning a ruby will ensure a peaceful, harmonious, and healthy life. Ruby is also believed to control one's passions and thoughts. To many people, its stimulating color represents heat, life, and power.

The toughness of ruby is excellent. Ruby may be cleaned by steaming, ultrasonic, jewelry cleaner, mild soap, and an untreated cloth. DO NOT boil a ruby!

Origin: Burma has the finest quality rubies; however, the main source today is Thailand. Sri Lanka has limited supplies.
Color: The color varies form fiery vermilion to violet red.
